There was never aproblem to display just German umlauts or just "š", "ž", "č". All of those characters could not be used simultaneously.
Although my version 1.36 does not recognize Unicode (UTF-16) SRTs, it does fine with subs muxed in Matroska. I just tested a few lines containing mutually exclusive Baltic and Cyrillic characters.
Despite of what some at this board might say Matroska != HiDefinition. If your comp is fast enough you can use this format for your collection. It supports practically unlimited number of tracks in any free a/v/sub format and can store descriptions of each track.
