I don't like to say this, but it's a fact that linux cannot really compete windows in multimedia stuff
mplayer or xine both play videos with far less cpu utilization and play more videos then the windows media player engine players like bsplayer. Both are also much more customizable and have more features. I like xine myself.

however i think bsplay uses the ms directX video engine for rendering (correct me anyone, if i'm wrong, but almost every windows player does)
vlc is the only one I'm aware of that uses it's own engine, it also has cpu utilization much lower then wmp.
