movie doesn't play

i've got this avi file that, when played, only shows the first handful of frames looping and flashing, while the timer and sound stream go ahead (i hear normal sound). It's encoded with divx 5.0. i've trying switching overlay modes and changing some options in the video tab, but the only thing that changed was that, when i switched to rgb overlay, instead of having the flashing stuff i only saw the very 1st frame still. windows media player won't play the video, but vlc and divx player will so i don't think it's a codec problem. Help?
