Can't create DirectDraw surface

When I launch BSplayer (build 807) the following message is displayed :
"Can't create DirectDraw surface!".

It is impossible to read *.avi files

note : I have WIN98 SE and directX 9.0b

seems Ok if I use "use VMR-9" setting (NOK with the default setting "use Overlay mode 1"
