"can't open file" for no apparent reason.

went to watch the most recent ep of naruto - and BSPlayer gives me nothing but "can't open file" errors.

media player classic is quite happy to open it, however, and there was no problem whatsoever with the playback in MPC.

filename is plain english, i can open other files from the same directory with no problems, etc. it's a straight xvid avi, codec is (obviously) working fine (i updated anyways, but didn't help). tried opening it both by double-clicking it, and through BSPlayers own open file function.
