Letterboxing - on the fly removal?

Often you get video clips with huge black bars above and below the actual picture and while this dosent matter for full screen its annoying when im not using full screen. Would it be possible to implement some sort of user selectable cropping so that the bars simply arent displayed while the clip is playing?

Reason im wondering about user selectable is that i imagine an automatic form would be impossible to implement. Perhaps set it up to use something like shift while you resize.

While i think about it, is there anyway to stop the 'About' menu from popping up? Its slightly annoying when i try to hit the close button and the about dialouge pops up.
