Default XVID codec

After reading thru most of the topics, I really start feeling a newbie  I have a very simple and basic question : I have a movie that BSplayer doesn't even want to open "unsupported file format : Xvid". What should I do to make BSPlayer support Xvid ?
thanks

download and install Xvid codec :)
or a "universal" decoder such as ffdshow
