What is overlay mode?

I just finished to reinstall my system and reinstalled the Nimo codec final 5.
At first, I only had sound but no image with movies so I put overlay mode 2 in video options and it works fine thanks to that.
But what do overlay mode 1 and 2 mean? (I'm french so..) WHat is the purpose of overlay mode and what does it change?
