Did your file play in VirtualDub? I will ask again :) Is it possible for me to acquire this problem file?

It is not easy to determine the problem over a text-based communication system. It would take – I dunno – maybe over a month to try out all options I could in an hour.

Edit:
I have not used AVIMedic and don't know what does it mean by "bad header". Did you select Matroska upon saving in VirtualDubMod? As I said before, maybe (depending on how bad the header is) mkvmerge/MMG is be able to recreate a valid MKV file from your AVI.

Digiface 8th August 2006 05:55 PM

yes it plays. file size is quite big,so it's kind of hard to send.

i didn't save as matroska. can matroska contain ac3 audio?

J7N 8th August 2006 05:59 PM

Matroska (*.mkv) can contain all common types of video, audio and subtitles, including AC-3. It was created as an uncommercial format for "backup" purposes because of AVI limitations. And unlike MPEG-2 Program or MP4 it is an universal container. Most recent VDM version warns about incomplete MKV support and it is indeed true. VirtualDubMod might not be able to open and save all MKV files, but it is not a limitation of the format itself (use mkvtoolnix).

Get MkvToolNix here:

just muxed it to .mkv, but still won't open.

BTW,.mkv files don't shrink anymore. (my first problem). maybe because of that new ffdshow i installed.

Upload the file or tell me how to get it over a P2P. (a clip won't do this time)

If the problem is in the header of the file you can try to take a look at the file in binary mode (for example by using HexWorkshop or similar applications)

Here are the information you need to compare: http://www.fastgraph.com/help/avi_header_format.html

Probably you'll have a hard time to track back the problem since some fields can't be simply recognized, but if you'll find the problem in the simplest ones (for example the last 6 items), you can fix the avi header by yourself

Maybe the problem is in the Video window size (the starting problem of this thread). The player read the video size from the file header (wrong one), then you change aspect ration and once you click Original it reads the values from the P frames images instead of the header, resulting in a correct aspect ratio..

I'm only supposing this, but if the problem really lays there... you only need to binary enter two (probably only one in your case) 4 bytes values and the avi is fixed :D

i opened that avi with XVI32 hex editor, but i don't understand anything about that. first aspect ratio problem and this avi problem are two tirely different problems. and that AR problem is solved.

i think next thing to try is install older version of BSP and check if that avi opens with that. problem (maybe) started after installing this 2.10 version.

is there packed version of older BSP,without installer and without WhenU?

BSPeter 9th August 2006 09:39 AM

Not packed but most recent without WhenU:

Digiface 9th August 2006 09:40 AM

just tried and nope, won't open in older version either.

EDIT. solved!! i unregistered Elecard demultiplexer and it opens! weird?

Really weird thing, but if it worked I'm happy for you... (really really really an odd thing)

You have to lower the merit of that filter using Filter Management or GSpot. I didn't want to complicate the installation in the first place and said it mostly works with the default settings. It may happen that a file is mistakenly recognized as MPEG-2 Program especially if you have MPEG-2 video in Matroska (then it starts to demultiplex small chunks of video data it can salvage). Otherwise it is a good demultiplexer.

Digiface 9th August 2006 03:06 PM

i use that MS default demultiplexer now. i don't have lot of use that anyway...

mpg2splt.ax v6.3.1.400 is unable to estimate playback time properly and has problems decoding at MPEG Cell boundaries. Maybe later versions are better.

Digiface 9th August 2006 03:22 PM

my version is 6.5.2600.2180
