Try changing the overlay mode.
For me, Overlay mode 2 or VMR-9 (renderless) worked for a .mkv package with RealVideo content.

Your problem is not due to BSplayer but rather to the fact you don't have the correct video codecs installed.
The error message you get gives you the FourCC code of the required codec....

Tested with 2 movies encoded one with DivX 3.11 alpha,
the other with DivX 5.02. Both crash.
