And read BSPeter's FAQs (link in my and Ico-man signature) There are programs such as GSpot which can tell you what codecs you need in order to play your files ;)

MKV usually require AC3Filter to be installed. It should handle everything OK.

When prompted by BS.Player at installation allow it to download the missing/outdated codecs/filters.
