Please tell us what codecs get loaded when you play an AVI. If you can't see the list because program crashes too soon, quickly navigate to the relevant menu (rightclick->options->filters), press printscreen, and then write down the filter names. For comparison, see also what codecs MPC uses. MPC is actually a proper player and has many free software decoders built-in.
