what kind of problems ?
I have no problem with bsplayer 0.86.493 and vobsub 2.23, either playing vobsub files or .srt files (I have not tested with bsplayer build 494 yet)

Is VobSub actually required? Afaik I don't use it, I just load the subtitle (.srt) files manually, and let BSPlayer display them.

Or am I making a mistake here? When loading subtitles manually (CTRL+L), picking a font and position with the BSPlayer menu option, then there's no VobSub involved at all, right??

To play vobsub files, yes it is required ;)
I'm lazy enough to prefer vobsub files to srt files when I rip a dvd [vobsub->no OCR needed]

As vobsub automatically loads when I have srt files with the same name as the movie, I find it more convenient to use it for every sub and disabling bsplayer's subtitles renderer than disabling it on the rare occasions when I have srt files...

If you use only text files, bsplayer is okay on its own, vobsub is not required ;)

@ Quietseb

Maybe needless to say that you can configure DVobsubs (auto)load behaviour
i.e. load when needed.
