deleting files

I just got a Galaxy Tab A running android 5.0 and i am unable to delete files from my SD card through the app. I used to have to long click on a file, select multiple files, long click again, and then select delete files. Now, when i follow those steps, the file remains in the list, but when i try to play the file it Padua about 1/2 a second and then stops.
