Unknown file format (DIV4) or (DIV3)

Sorry about my bad english... But when im going to open an .avi comes a message wich says : Unknown file format (DIV4) and in another file it says : Unknown file format (DIV3). We tried to open these files in my friends machine and they worked... I can open some .avi files but sometimes it does that.

What could possible be the problem??
I just want to get subtitles to movies but it doesn`t play the movie...

Please, answer!

sollution to this is getting the right codecs,

try downloading and installing the NIMO codec pack,
every codec you'll ever need is included.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling DivX codecs.
