Won't load embedded subtitles, sometimes

Sometimes bsplayer won't load embedded subs for some reason. If I use the core media player or windows media player subs are loaded just fine, but not for bsplayer. It looks like bsplayer might not be loading embedded subs if they don't have a name. For example if I load a file with embedded subs using media player, directvobsub will list it as "subtitle 1", but when I use bsplayer for the same avi file directvobsub will not list any subtitles but it still detects the presence of subtitles. On the other hand if the subs are given a name like "english", directvobsub will list it as "subtitle english" and this works fine with bsplayer and all other players too.
