Any resolution on the EIP on opening AVI files?

Any resolution so far on the problem where double clicking on xvid and divx type files that suddenly result in a 'EIP'. You can 'play' them but you can't have the application 'open' by double clicking on the file. This popped up AFTER XP Service Pack 2 was installed.
