BS .85 displays correctly but BS 1.22 doesnt?

I have been using BS .85 to watch some downloaded movies. Recently I downloaded some movies with a new format. I thought it might help to download the newest version of BS Player

But to my surprise - my old movies do not display correctly, the sound works but the screen is black with thin diagonal lines

I would have thought anything BS .85 could play 1.22 should play
What is going on?
