Default Hardware Decoding supported for Note 2?

I am trying to play 1080p mkv files on the Note2. Unfortunately, using the hardware decoding options it stutters. Using the same file, with the same sd card- my Glaxay S3 can play the video flawlessly which is puzzling to me.

If I use the software decode option the Note2 will play back the video fairly smoothly, however the color hues in scenes of a movie are constantly changing.

I find it odd that the S3 is playing movies more reliably than the note2.

Does anyone know if hardware decoding is set up for the Note2?

Thanks
