Default BS, WMP, ... don't play .avi anymore?!?

Hi everybody,

I've got the following, very big problem.
Today, I downloaded the 3rd episode of season 3 of LOST.
And since that moment, the troubles began.
When the download was finished, I tried to play the video, but I recieved an error, and my Windows Explorer shot down too.
I tried to open the .avi with WMP, and other problems, but they also can't play .avi anymore!
I restarted my PC, I even did a system repair, but the problem is still there..
What can I do??

The error report from BS says:

BSplayer v2.00.937, Unhandled exception at EIP: 00000000
If you click 'Close' application will be terminated.
Please report this info to the author with description what were you doing.
If you have internet connection, it's recommended to send error report, this will help us solve problems faster.
Access violation at address 00000000. Read of address 00000000

I have Windows XP Professional.

I hope there's anyone who can help me, cause it's very sad when you can't play .avi anymore... :(

Thank you guys..

How can I reinstall codecs? And on which location on my computer are they installed?
And which do I need to fix the problem?

Sorry for this (stupid?) questions, but I'm not so familiar with all this..

Thanx..

Did you re-register quartz.dll? I assume you also tried to play other avi's than the one you just downloaded. Maybe there's something wrong with your download and perhaps it's a good idea to first do a virus-scan?
:?

I re-registered quartz.dll, but still the same problem.. And yes, the problem is with every .avi-movie I've got.. Damn it's so strange, yesterday everthing worked fine!

PS: This file is downloaded over the world by millions of people, and they all haven't any problem..

I also did a virus scan -> no malware found

Have you installed any codec pack? If the answer is YES then uninstall it (click on Windows START button -> Control panel -> Add / Remove programs -> Search for a codec pack or similar name)

I ask you about codec pack since you said you don't know where they are installed etc... Once you have removed it (if you had installed it previously) use GSpot to know which codecs you need to play your movies, then go to this adicoto's post and download the codecs you need (probably you'll only need to download ffdshow since it can decode almost all video types)

OFF TOPIC:
WOW GSpot has been updated in these months and I have not updated it yet
