What program Codex’s does BSplayer NEED to work properly? I liked BSplayer so much I told a friend about it (He was using at least 5 different players just to open 5 different file types, and since the BSplayer can do almost all of them using one player only (IIRC), I told him about it, he looked at the site and liked it.) Se he decided to blank (format) his HDD and reinstall the OS to the factory settings of when he got it (we both do this for security/personal reasons once in a while) And after it booted up perfectly for first time , we installed BSplayer (only installed WinZip and WinRar first, nothing else) and then decide to watch some files and stuff. But when we try and open the file, it says: “…Error: Can’t open file…” :x 01) What do we need, ‘minimal’ on his OS to play all types of audio/video files,or just the most common ones and stuff? :!: BSplayer: v1.37 (build 826, 11. Dec 2005) His PC Info: OS: Microsoft Windows XP Pro (SP2) DirectX: 9.0c CPU: AMD Athlon XP, 1800 MHz (13.5 x 133) 2400+ RAM: 1024 MB Video Card: nVIDIA GeForce 6200 AGP I was able to get the exact name of the file also, might help: - “[a4e]Lost_Universe_01[divx5.2.1].mkv” “…So the video format is DX50. Thats MPEG-4 ASP, more commonly known as DivX…” *I was able to put this file on my computer and see the file type, it was the same as one of mine I had problems with, so I quoted ‘J7N’ on what he/she said on what type it was for your info* After we got that error, I went to www.divx.com and downloaded ‘DivX for Windows 6.5’ and installed just the codex part, only parts that are selected, nothing else: http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/6605/untitledto3.jpg But, after restarting computer and trying to open file again, same error, any ideas? I bet it’s something simple, hopefully. :? I was thinking about installing these to fix this, but no idea if will help or make it worse, haven’t done anything else yet: - Gabest's splitter * - DivX 3.11 ** * Already have, from topic before. **No idea were to get this, can I have the official URL please? Ty again for all the help and advise! |

A video file consists in 2 or more streams, a video one, 1 or more audio streams and also may contain subtitles. The way they are packed together depends on the container used. We have .mpeg .avi .mkv for example. To play the file yoy need to splitt the streams (using a splitter) and to decode them (using a decoder\filter). In your case, you have the decoder for the stream (DivX in your case) but not the splitter for the container (.mkv in this case). Got it ? If you do a litle search on the forum, you will end up by finding a post called "List of codecs". Read it, it may be usefull too. |
| |||
adicoto's list of codecs is a great point to start from ;) Anyway for noob users sometimes is simpler to use a codec pack... 99% of times I (and others on this forum) discourage to use codec packs because really often they produce worst results (when they produce some results :lol: ) than to use only the needded codecs. I suggest you to try to install FFDShow if you want something that will decode almost all the video types, then use GSpot to know which codecs you need to decode the unplayable movies and refere to adicoto's list to know where to bring them. Finally, if you are really desperate and can't play the majority of your files, try to install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack ( :twisted: ), yes, one of the evil codec packs I spoken of above.. Install it with the Playback profile, and instead of using Haali splitter, change the corresponding fields with Gabest's alternatives. TRY IT ONLY IF THE PREVIOUS METHODS DON'T WORK, OR IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO INSTALL ;)

That is true for MY computer, I am still having problems like you described, but THIS topic is ONLY for a friend's computer that has only installed these in this order, and nothing else, yet: - WinZip v11 (Pro) - WinRar v3.61 (Pro) - BSplayer: v1.37 (build 826, 11. Dec 2005) (free version) And is having trouble with files that I can play (except some slight hanging in the video) They work on my PC, but we are confused and trying to find out what exactly I need to help him install on his computer to get them to work properly as well. So shoudl we: - Install 'Gabest's splitter'? - Or should I install 'FFDShow'? *what one do we need if we do DL ffdshow?* http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7173/untitlediz8.jpg Also: we have to install a codec pack, should we install 'CCCP' or 'K-Lite Mega Codec Pack'? (haven't done, yet) |

You need to install splitters AND filters. DivX, XviD, CoreAVC, FFDshow, are filters/decoders. Haali media splitter, GAbest matroska splitters are splitters. I personally don't recommend nor use codec packs. The filters/decoders can be found on the topic mentioned above. |

But in desperate cases sometimes a codec pack is the last and only solution (sometimes they work, but only if you set the right filters/splitters to be installed)

Don't download ffdshow from the SourceForge page. It is an outdated version. Try here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm Get SSE compile if you have Pentium 3 or Pentium 4. Otherwise try MMX or the regular build. |

I don't know anything at all about filters/splitters/codex. :oops: I only know that you need them to play some file, I guess depending on the way/program that is used and what the file was before, and the codex, you need a certain one to play certain files. (only guessing) We both have only come across a rare few files we get off the net the requires a codex or something to even play, and it normally comes with the 'package' or we just do a quick google search and download the firs thank that pops up to get it to work. *not a good idea, but considering we know almost nothing about stuff like this…*. So, I'm sorry if this seams like your baby sitting someone threw a simple step or something, this is new to both of use and we are trying our bests to learn and not get on your nerves, that much : ). His CPU is a: CPU: AMD Athlon XP, 1800 MHz (13.5 x 133) 2400+ So I think that is at least a Pentium 3, right? Download the ffdshow from link and get/install the ‘SSE compile’ right? |
| |||
That 'SSE' stuff only applies to the ffdshow filter itself. The main decoding library (libavcodec.dll) always contains MMX/SSE/SSE2 code. So speedwise there is not much difference between builds. Also get ffdshow from http://www.ffdshow.info Only n00bs get their stuff from free-codecs. |

I'm a bit confused, sorry :oops: "...Don't download ffdshow from the SourceForge page. It is an outdated version. Try here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm .."I downloaded that, but I couldn’t get it to the computer because I had an appointment that day and was busy for a time, I was then able to get to his house, but we decided to check this topic before installing it, and how we see this: Quote:
Not sure about the ‘nOOb thing, but: I went there, but I see this page, what one do I download? http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8311/untitledwp7.jpg And in general, what one do I use, the first link or the 2nd link one that I’m confused on, and what one to download/install? *very confuse on who to listen to and , just confused in general now* :? |
| |||
That's the reason I haven't posted in here any more. Too many opinions and you may get confused. My advice ? Follow ones instructions from the beginning to the end. See the result. If it's not good, undo all and try another way. But don't mix up suggestions. Don't start with one ideea and end with another one. |

What program Codex's does BSplayer NEED to work properly? FFDShow (DirectShow decoding filter) can play many video formats; DivX, XviD, H.264 and so on... When you install FFDShow, you don't have to install all those codecs separately + FFDShow's CPU usage is (much) lower. FFDShow can also show subtitles. FFDShow can also handle many audio formats; AC3 (Dolby Digital), Vorbis (ogg), AAC and so on... But to AC3 i prefer AC3Filter. (then disable AC3 from FFDShow). Then there is different file types, like: .mkv (Matroska), .mp4 and ogg/ogm. (.avi is the most common of course). There is build-in AVI splitter in Windows, but for those other file types you have to install their own splitters separately. You can also install 'Haali Media Splitter' to play those file types. Benefit of HMS is, that it can also split i.e. chapters from .mkv and .mp4 files. Those separate Gabest splitters can't do that. For DVD playback you need an DVD/MPEG2 Decoder.
