Do you happen to know the type of the sound?
Maybe AC3? If so: do you have AC3 filter installed? You can download it here.
If you like to know what codecs your avi needs to play, you can find out using (e.g.) GSpot. See the 2nd item of my post Help to Help (just click on the link hereunder).
