Default subtitles

whats going on peeps...i have a japanese movie in ".divx" format that i am trying to watch, but its in japanese, and i can't understand it. there is a subtitle file in the folder with the movie file, but when i try to load it in bsplayer, nothing happens...is there something special i am not doing?? help me out, i am anxious to see this movie!
