Default Is the Divx codec free or shareware?

Hi,

Do we have to buy the Divx 6.6 codec for viewing only Divx movies?
From Divx home page I found only a full Divx player version with 15 days trial time.
Where to get the 6.6 codec only?
At least the Xvid last codec 1.1.3 seems to be free.

Thanks.

And - of course - you can always decide to use trusted DivX5.2.1 as decoder filter. You can download it (i.a.) here.
In this connection a warning for Win98 and WinMe users: do not install DivX6.x codec!

(Note: you only need the codec for playback, so you do NOT need to install the trial Pro-version and/or the DivX Player; also you do not need to "include Google", which are all included in this "bundle"; you can simply deselect these upon installation).

You don't need DivX codec for viewing. God knows what BS they managed to pack in those 20 megabytes. With ffdshow you can decode plenty of file formats and even do some encoding (not recommended) and the installer is 4 megs.

Note, whereas this may apply for DivX6.x, this remark certainly does not apply to DivX5.2.1 (which certainly isn't obsolete either)!

Hi,

Thanks.
This 20Mb installation size of Divx6.6 seems frightening indeed.

The need for new codec arised watching HDTV Divx encoded with 5.0 but movie didn't look normal (horisontal double rows) until I updated to 6.6.
Also FF didn't work as expected.

And what decoder-filter did BS.Player then use?
Or (put it otherwise) what was shown under (rightclick >) Options > Filters > Advanced?

Use ffdshow. Or install CCCP codec pack.

Preferably NEVER install any codec-packs!
:?
(And if you nevertheless do, make very good use to deselect as many items as possible (you certainly don't need all of them)!)
