I would say it depends on your (stand-alone) DVD-player.
If it supports e.g. avi-moviefiles and srt-subtitles (which many stand-alone players do nowadays) it works OK.
It may also depend on how you created your DVD.
How did you burn your videofile to DVD (as data or as DVD-video or ...)?
What DVD-Player do you have?
