Frame by frame doesn't work

I mean - when you hit pause, then go backwards or forwards frame by frame through the direction buttons --> or <--. I tried it on many versions of bs player, it doesnt work on my PC, although I can remember a time when it did.

What can I do? Enable/disable something? Help!
