hell no! :)

well, solid background in vplayer works this way: subtitles are shown _under_ the movie and each movie is automaticly moved to top if necessary.

so no subtitles are shown on the movie picture.

dunno if i explained it well, you should see it with vplayer.
vplayer v0.6e is quite old, from 2001 i think, but i have to admit i have tested many players and none has such a feature :|
