Default EQUALIZER doesn't work

I must be dumb but do i need a special codec to run the equalizer in the latest build? i go to the options menu in preferences but all the bands are grayed out. when I go to audio->equalizer, the equalizer comes up but it doesn't do anything?

OK if you are looking for codecs follow this thread:

http://forum.bsplayer.org/viewtopic.php?p=15154#15154

If you press Ctrl + P you should get the prefferences window up and you should see Equalizer under the Audio section. Make sure the Equaliser enabled is ticked.

Hope this helps.[/url]

Equalizer bands indeed greyed out, so you can't change these. Nevertheless Equalizer is working overhere.
Perhaps check if setting under rightclick > Options > Preferences > Audio is "System default"? (I would always try that first).
Play an .avi and then, with Equalizer panel active, move its most left slider (=preAmp) all the way up.
Still no difference?
