Can you tell us what codec is used to encode the movie, and what codec is used to decode the file ? (using GSpot or avicodec)

Maybe an XVid encoded AVI?
If so you should either set DivX (if 5.1.1.) "Quality setting" to "Support Generic Mpeg-4" (through [Start] > Programms > DivX > DivX Codec > Decoder Configuration Utility ....
or you should download/install a more recent version of XVid codec.
See adocoto's post here.

(P.S. For GSpot or Avicodec look under item 2 of my Help to Help post (link hereunder))

Yes, I have seen this kind of distorsion on MPEG2 files, but only on CD. Never on HDD. But, try a different MPEG 2 codec. If you use Elecard, try to change to InterVIdeo. See what is happening. How does it look if you open it with VirtualDubMPEG2 or VirtualDubMod ?
