Follow-Up

I had to read some old Divx 3 files and I wanted to try ffdshow and see if it might work. I installed the October 12th 2004 release with Xvid 1.0.3 (December 12th 2004 CVS compilation) and after many nightly show watches, I still haven't had an incident of BSPlayer eating up all the CPU. If anyone has this problem, just install Xvid and it should work fine.
