Default Can't play 640x480 wmv

Please can someone help?

I'm using latest BSplayer downloaded from this website. Using Overlay Mode 1 render.

I can't play a 640x480 WMV anymore - I got sound but I get a black screen! Windowed and Full screen.

It was fine until I messed around with "Change resolution" in the player. Now it plays it ok if I go 640x480 or 800x600 but not at my native TFT monitor (and my Windows desktop) resolution 1024x768. I tried other renders like "Force RGB" which is okay but video is slow on my low spec PC.

320x240 videos are OK though.

Tried it in Windows Media Player - nothing wrong with the WMV file!
I tried reinstalling BSplayer but still same problem!!

What is the problem??

Have you tried to manage with the VideoCard settings?
Which DirectX/VideoDrivers have you installed on your PC? Try updating to latest available..

Does BSplayer gives you an error message or what?

Have you reinstalled BSplayer on your previous installation, or you have firstly removed the previous installation and made a fresh install?

Maybe none of these suggestion would help, but try all the possibilities...
Good Luck!

Hi, thanks for the reply...

I just updated from DX8.1 to DX9.0c and installed newest video drivers.
I ran DXDiag tests and get no problems.
I also uninstalled BSplayer, then installed it again.

No error messages from BSplayer.
But still the same problem.

My video chip is internal ATI Rage Pro AGP 2x 4MB @ 1024x768x32bit - is that not enough for BSplayer to play 640x480 files? But Windows Media Player can play it no problem and very fast.!

The only way i can play it is if I:
Change desktop resolution to 800x600 or 640x480
OR
Change desktop Color Depth to 16-bit
OR
Control Panel--Display properties--Settings--Advanced--Troubleshooting and drag the bar to "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations...." or lower... but the video then plays slow which is no good.

If I can't solve this problem I will have to go back to Windows Media Player even though I hate it.

I'm sorry you were not able to fix the resolution problem :(

I have no other suggestion to help you, maybe someone else will be more helpful :)

I don't think that BSplayer requires high performance Graphic Cards, it's the less expensive player in CPU and Memory usage on the market
Maybe you can try old (0.86.501) version of BSplayer, you can find it Here and Here. It consumes even less resources, but as I already said, I don't think it's a low memory grphic card problem.

Stay tuned, and good luck for your problem!! :)

I'm afraid I don't know your ATI-card, but I wonder if under [Display properties > Settings > Advanced] there are also options with respect to "overlay". If so I would try to change those.
Another thought: under (rightclick >) Options > Filters > Advanced there will be an MPEG-4 video compressor. Can't you change its settings re CPU usage?

Overlay... it's just settings for Hue, Saturation etc. Nothing to help the videos to play. :(

I don't see "MPEG-4 video compressor" there.

Really puzzling problem this is!

(Sorry, should be a decompressor of course)
So, what DO you see there with respect to video-playback?

Maybe check your file with GSpot [Read item (3) of my Help2Help-post (a.k.a. "READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING")]

I'm having trouble with WMV files. I don't have other format files at 640x480 to test it. I don't see "MPEG 4" or even MPEG anywhere.

Nothing is displayed on screen (blank video screen), but the video is running as I can see the movie position bar moves, and the audio works too.

GSpot reports: "DirectShow claims to be able to play the file"

GSpot usually gives more information; like "The following combination of filters were used: ...". This is not so with you?
Also again: what IS shown under (rightclick >) Options > Filters > Advanced regarding video?
Further, when playing the .wmv file in WMP, please also check the (audio/)video codec (file > Properties > [file] > (Audio/)Video codec .?.)
(FYI: WMV8, 9, 10 codecs are microsoft's MPEG4 codecs; by the way, what version of WMP is installed?).
I understand you ran dxdiag; it could be of interest to know what is shown under display (e.g. with respect to display memory, AGP and DDraw status (and Test Result).

(Still seems to me it may be an overlay problem; you also tested using no overlay?)

--------------------------------------------------------

I'm using WMP9 and Windows 2000.
By the way I just uninstalled DX9 because it slowed down some of my other programs and gone back to DX8.1.

If I use don't use Overlay, I get a black screen from ALL of my videos.
If I use Overlay Mode 2, the 320x240 videos plays great! perfect!, but the 640x480 videos plays abnormally fast (too fast at super speed!) not syncing with the audio properly...

Sorry if it's too much, but I really appreciate the help, thank you.

First of all, 4 MB is too low for a file at 640x480 if you don't use overlay mode, sorry to disapoint you from the start. But have you tryied rgb overlay. At this point it can be the last point to help. But also, reinstaling BSPlayer (and deleting the settings file- BSPlayer.yourname.xml)

If I tick "Use RGB Overlay":
Some 320x240 videos cover half of (vertical perspective) video screen, and garbled colours, mostly pink/puprle.
Some 320x240 videos are OK (but looks a bit more pixelated than without RGB overlay).
640x480 videos - BSplayer gives an error window saying "Can't create DirectDraw surface!"

If I tick "Force RGB mode":
320x240 videos give slow frame rate... 640x480 even slower.

As I said, Overlay Mode 2 CAN play 640x480 videos, but at a ridulously fast speed (but also, the frame rate IS SMOOTH!) so I think my PC is more than capable of playing these videos. If I change the "Playback rate" at 1/2 speed, it is STILL playing at a ridulously fast speed.

I tried that, but it's still the same problems.

Have you tried to play any other 640x480 WMV file, perhaps your WMV file is broken?

I suggest you to do this: uninstall Windows Media Player, and than install newest Windows Media Player 10.This must solve your problem.
