"Disable embedded subtitles" isn't checked/selected by any chance?
(under rightclick > Options > Preferences > Subtitles [Subtitle properties]) 
P.S.:
(1) Are you using old or new subtitle engine? (same BS.Player window as above)
(2) Actually version 2.57 build 1045beta is the most recent at present.
