Tizio... As i said i am running Windows98 And version 1.36.825 works perfect. 1.38 & 1.39 don't install properly...why...??? And nothing is different on my machine....i just re-install 1.36.85...after 1.38 & 1.39 fail and everything works great..so it is something in 1.38 & 1.39 that is different that my machine does'nt like....probably something to do with the addware that is bundled...as the install fails right around the point where the vvsn folder is being installed...???? I even disabled my anti-virus program for the install of 1.38 & 1.39 same result install fails arounf the point where the adware folder vvsn is being installed. But if i re-install 1.36.825 with anti-virus activated like normal.....there are no install or operating problems at all......???? |
| |||
As I mentioned I tested the installer on Windows ME that's pretty identical to Windows 98.. Probably as you said the problem lays into the WhenU adware interfering with you antivirus program.. Have you tried to install BSplayer v1.40? It has been released few hours ago.. Probably the result will be the same, but who knows?! Can you tell me what antivirus program are you using?

I sent you the link of non-pro v1.39. Programmers tend to forget that someone still uses Win98. The all great VideoLAN for example also is unstable on Win98 and plays all audio @ DAC's frequency without resampling (YMF724, Realtek tested). WinME is like Win98SE with 'modern' graphics and pchealth bloatware added. |

I said that I had no problems with WindowsME, and since, as you say, it's as like as the 98 one.. there shouldn't had been negligences by developers in this field.. :?

On the other hand OS config might be different while you Tizio have all defaults. The installer (not to mention WhenU) is an unneeded step. First you must ensure NSIS will run, then the malware [dunno if an acknowledgement of succesful install is required], and only then the actual BSPlayer. Of course I could mention the exe-protection used, but thats too much. To summarize: If the installer does not run, do not execute it. Run BSPlayer the old-fashioned way. |

J7N & Tizio...and all others Here is my latest update. First of all J7N i downloaded and unpacked your version that you sent me without the installer. I unpacked it to a new folder..then like normal i hit bsplayer.exe...immediately it failed just like all the other versions 137 & 138 & 139 & 140....(Invalid page faults with address of zero's) (plus runtime errors)....So i tried all of the above versions both with SAVE adware and Pro versions without the bundled SAVE. Therefore i suspected something with my machine. (which is windows 98)... So next i tried all of the above on my other TEST machine which is bare bones Windows 98 (It has only Win 98 on it no other software). Since all the versions fail on both my machines...137 & 138 & 139 & 140...and ONLY... 1.36.825 or previous works for me perfectly on both my machines. I can only think that is nothing to do with the adware SAVE or the installer...but...i has to do with all versions above 1.36.825 [ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 98].... So if anyone else is running Windows 98....NOT ME or SE or XP...just WIN98.....try test any version for me that is higher than 1.36.825... Thanks....or any other solutions to my problem will be greatly appreciated..!! §teve... :? |

I think that the best chances are that Win98 is nolonger supported, maybe by the installer itself or windows installer. I think neither MS doesn't support Win98 any more. EDIT: maybe is DirectX who is responsible !!! I think you need at least DirectX7 and Win98 AFAIK has only 6.4 or someting like this. EDIT2: Unofficialy this support does not exist any more. Officialy: Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related components) will transition to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Microsoft is not offering a custom support agreement for these products. http://www.microsoft.com/Windows98/ |

Adicoto... Thanks for your input. But this has nothing to do with Microsoft support for Windows 98. It has to do with BSPlayer incompatibility with Windows 98..above version 1.36.825. Also i am running DirectX 9.0c..which also works ok with BSPlayer 1.36.825. If there is a page fault and runtime error it has to do with the code in BSPlayer for the versions above..1.36.825...It is something in the code for bsplayer.exe that calls a module that Windows 98 doesn't like...!!!!! Anyhow thanks for your in-put..!!! Keep those ideas coming....and as i said before i want someone else to install any versions above 1.36.825 on WINDOWS 98....and let me know if they get them to install and execute ..properly...!! Thanks.. §teve.... :idea: |

Yes, I know it has nothing to do with Win98 support, but I posted this so you won't go so hard on those who doesn't support it any more. I am sure it has something to do with Win98 itself, something in it's basics isn't working with BSplayer. Maybe posting the exact error and the exact step where it occurs (the bundled and the clean install) will help locating the source. |

I knew a person with Windows98 SE installed on its machine, but unfortunally he moved to XP 3 months ago. Anyhow never known anybody with Win98 FE... Sorry.. This and most probably the Windows2K related problem, seem to be incompatibility issues that must be fixed in next releases.

Windows 98 had DirectX 5 by default and first thing to do after installation was to install 6.1 - 7. I hope I will be able to test v1.39 on my other Win98 (FE) machine today. Update: I was able to start v1.39 on the other comp [DirectX 8]. However, the startup time was MUCH longer. You might never notice this on fast machines, but it's a fact. The only obvious difference from v1.36 was a new goddamn NeoLite protector. Unfortunately the testing ended there as the system no longer worked properly without a sound card (media files could not be rendered in any BS). |

So you are telling that (even if in a slow way) the installation process is supported also by Win98.. Are you sure it's NeoLite? I'm pretty sure it's not neolite (if you want I can tell you which one is used, I don't think it's a scret :) ), but still the same protector as always from 2 (and maybe 3) years to now.. However the protector used is pretty slow on old machines, especially with some antivirus (not updated Norton, McAfee v7 and later etc.. It's a bit faster with NOD32).. You can notice this majorly on Win 9.x systems instead of WinXP ones because WinXP uses a better handling of the simultaneous processes, while with old Windows the pc hanged until the antivirus unpacking process was ended..

I am telling that BSPlayer can be run on Win98, not the installer. Well, at least without audio hardware. ;) I won't try the installer because of WhenU. Quote:
