So far I have done a lot of DVD backups spanning 2 or sometimes 3 (Lord of the Rings) CDs with MPEG2 -> MPEG4 transformation, mostly XVid.
For I don't really see the purpose for a test environment...

You see, putting VBR MP3 into AVI is a hack anyway.
Use VDubMod and save to matroska or Ogg media file (ogm) as a better alternative...

Even with build 814 now I'm not able to switch audio streams within mp4 containers.
The mp4 are fully spec compliant so I do not expect problems derive from that side. Anyway the file plays fine...
